Use AI to Outline Your Digital Product Without Losing Your Voice

AI assistants can make creating a digital product faster, particularly the early, messy stages. They can also leave your product sounding like everyone else’s. The fix is to decide what the AI does and what you do before you open the chat.

Let AI Do the Scaffolding, Not the Substance

Good jobs for an assistant include suggesting outlines for you to react to, listing questions a beginner might ask, tightening a paragraph you wrote, and checking a draft for gaps or repeated points. Weaker jobs include writing the finished product, supplying facts, or deciding what is true. You supply the experience, the opinions and the examples that make the product worth paying for, and you verify every claim.

A Simple Four-Step Workflow

  1. Write the promise yourself. One sentence: who it is for and what they can do afterward.
  2. Ask for three different outlines. Compare them, then merge the best parts into your own. Ask the assistant to list what a reader might still be confused about.
  3. Draft each section yourself. Use AI afterward to flag unclear sentences, not to replace them. Keep what sounds like you.
  4. Check facts against primary sources. Anything with a number, date, price or rule gets verified. See our guide to fact-checking AI output.

Know the Rules Before You Publish

Platforms differ. Amazon KDP, for example, distinguishes between AI-generated content (text, images or translations created by an AI tool, even if you edit it afterward) and AI-assisted content (work you created yourself and used AI to edit, refine or brainstorm). As of October 2026, its help page says you must tell KDP about AI-generated content when you publish, but not about AI-assisted content, and you remain responsible for all of it meeting its content and intellectual property rules. Check the current page before you publish, because policies change.

Ownership is a separate question. The US Copyright Office has published guidance on the copyrightability of AI outputs, and purely AI-generated material may not be protected. Our post on copyright and AI-generated content explains the basics. This is general information, not legal advice. For disclosure on other platforms, see when to disclose AI use.

Protect Your Customers and Yourself

Do not paste customer data or private documents into a chat you have not checked the privacy settings for. Our guide on what to keep out of AI chats has a short checklist.

The Honest Trade-Off

AI can save time on structure and editing, but it does not remove the work of knowing your subject. If you could not explain the product without the assistant, you are not ready to sell it yet.

Do this today

Pick a product idea and write its one-sentence promise. Ask an assistant for three outlines, then copy only the headings you like into a document of your own.
